No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
