Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor
In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
