McDonald's has taken down a holiday commercial created using Artificial Intelligence following receiving widespread online backlash.

The 45-second film was produced with the help of AI-generated video and was originally released on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.

Social Media Response and Removal

Following its publication, commenters denounced the employment of AI in the advert. A number of described it as "creepy" and "poorly edited".

"This incident represents an valuable lesson as we investigate the proper application of generative technology," stated a spokesperson from the company.

The advert was developed for McDonald's by Dutch company TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It depicted a series of things that often go badly over the Christmas break, using the theme "not the most wonderful time of the year".

A Growing Phenomenon of AI in Advertising

Campaigns that incorporate AI-created content have emerged as a increasing phenomenon among large corporations, especially for the Christmas season.

  • Coca-Cola has also launched consecutive AI-generated Christmas commercials.
  • Inherent Limitations: Because videos created using current AI video tools are susceptible to become unstable the longer they run, most AI video outputs tend to be only six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also provoked concerns about automation in the creative sector, with some observers noting it might reduce opportunities for camera crews.

Response from the Production Company

Following the commercial being pulled, The Sweetshop's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, defended the project.

According to her, the development required "over a month and a half" and involved producing "thousands of takes" which were then edited during the edit "just as we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't just an experiment," she commented. "We consider it a film."

Mixed Audience Sentiment

While the Dutch McDonald's ad was mostly panned, the response for other AI-assisted campaigns has been divisive.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created Christmas spot from another major brand according to analysis garnered a 61% "positive sentiment rating" from online commenters.

However, several companies have likewise received scrutiny for using AI in marketing. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that some called "low-effort" and "uncanny".

The incident illustrates the continuing debate within the advertising and creative industries about the balance between AI efficiency and creative integrity.
