European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
